Ola!

I’m Mayra Dantas Bueno, I’m 17 years old and I’m an exchenge student from Brasil, a country where we speak Portuguese, love soccer and have Carnaval. My mother is a lawyer, my father is a manager and my brother is in studying psychology in university.

I left my friends, family, food and school in Brasil to came to Taiwan to learn Chinese and your unique culture which is very different from what I was used to for a year. It’s being worth it. I didn’t expected people to be so friendly making me feel very welcome to this new world. My host-families treat me like I’m a daughter giving me more then I need. My new classmates are very warm and talkative; the classroom is always excited and they’re always trying to include me in the activities. The teachers are always there to help whenever I need. Everyone is always smiling and being nice to me.

I can easily say that I really love Taiwan. Is a wonderful place, full of new discoveries everyday even being so far away from my homeland. Everything is so convenient once I can find what I want easily.

The hardest obstacle is being definitely the language. Is complicated for me to overcome my shyness to practice the talking and the Chinese writing is very complex, not to mention how people here easily mix Chinese and Taiwanese and makes me confused. But I’m trying hard, I have great teachers and I’m very willing to learn. The words have each five different tones and if I say it in a different tone, people can’t understand what I’m trying to say so I have to memorize not just the names but how to use the tones and each word in each situation like the expressions and my bad memory doesn’t help.

It’s interesting to find everywhere in Taiwan traditions mixed up with these modern technologies which this country is famous for. The festivities and the old style of life contrasts with how easy people are so used to computers, mobile phones, mp3 and things alike. I’m truly enjoying myself with shopping since things here are so cheap, clothes, accessories, food, way of life in general, people here can live comfortable without much so they can spend their money going abroad. One of my dreams is be able to do that, traveling around the world.

I didn’t have many problems with adaptation. Especially the food since I always loved seafood even if I ate beef almost everyday. The rice tastes different, but usually I got used to it. But what I still think its weird is the sweet beans, I used to eat salty beans mixed with the rice so to see it like a desert it’s never very appealing to me. It’s a shame that in Brasil we don’t have the Bubble Milk Tea, because I found out is one of my favorite drinks.

School here is very tiresome. Students here study so hard and stay in school all day and still they are so cheerful. I was used to have lunch at noon already at home with the family, but here, your classmates are like a family. Compared to mine old high-school, this one is very big and I like it very much even with the excessive conservative rules.

I’m having the great opportunity to learn a lot of cool things that I probably wouldn’t have in my city. Like Chinese Calligraphy, the beautiful Chinese stamps, the art of Diabolo, the Chinese instrument called Er-hu, the complexity of the Chinese chess and of course the Chinese language itself.

It’s being a wonderful experience, the things I’m learning here I will carry with me for the rest of my life and hopefully I’ll be able to spread this cultural exchange when I go back to Brasil.
